The modern anesthesiologist is a doctor of medicine (M.D.) with three to five additional years of specialty training in anesthesiology. Anesthesiologists are involved in intensive care, cardiac resuscitation, respiratory therapy, and pain treatment. Our primary role is to care for patient needs before, during, and after surgery. Capitol Anesthesiology Association (CAA) is a team of highly qualified physicians specializing in the field of anesthesiology. Many have additional expertise in subspecialty areas such as obstetrics, pediatrics, intensive care, cardiovascular surgery, and pain therapy. We provide anesthesia services at many Austin area hospitals including Seton Medical Center, Seton Northwest, Brackenridge, Children's Hospital of Austin, Bailey Square Surgical Center, Health South Surgical Hospital, and Central Park Surgery Center. Our physicians must be certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology, or, for recent graduates, in active pursuit of certification. Every member of CAA fulfills an annual commitment to continuing medical education. In addition, quality assurance programs are monitored by CAA in cooperation with each hospital at which we practice anesthesia. Although our growth has paralleled that of Austin, we remain committed to retaining a personalized touch while delivering quality care. Click here to view a list of current CAA Anesthesiologists.

Your anesthetic will be administered by members of CAA's Anesthesia Care Team. This consists of a CAA anesthesiologist directing a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA). A CRNA is a registered nurse with a minimum of one year experience in critical care nursing (e.g., ICU, CCU, ER) who has passed a national certification exam following graduation from an accredited teaching program where they learn specialized anesthetic management techniques. Since 1990 all such programs have been required to be at the masters degree level; furthermore, all CRNA's are required by law to achieve 40 hours of continuing medical education every two years in order to retain their license to practice. A CAA physician will be responsible for your anesthetic care and will make medical decisions involved with this care. One or more members of the Anesthesia Care Team will be with you throughout your procedure, closely monitoring your anesthetic, and will accompany you to the recovery room where you will be delivered into the care of special Recovery Room nurses.
