Ankle Block is an appropriate form of anesthesia for operations on the
foot. Patients having this form of anesthesia usually have their block
placed in our holding area prior to going to the operating room. After
starting an IV for fluids and medications, a series of local anesthetic
injections is made around the ankle which produce numbness in the foot.
Most patients can be given some sedative medication during the injections
to ease with any discomfort during that phase, and typically there is no
memory of the injecting after surgery. Ankle blocks can be given on one
or both of the feet, and are usually effective. When the foot does not
go completely numb, the surgeon can often supplement with extra local during
the operation. As always, there will be someone from CAA with you throughout
the procedure, monitoring you and ready to administer a general anesthetic
should it become necessary.
